The Role
The Senior Mechanical Engineer will play both a lead and support role within the group, performing technical design work as well as project management and mentoring. On individual projects, you will be expected to independently lead the mechanical discipline in proposal generation, mechanical design, coordination, and implementation across a range of projects in the commercial, institutional, and industrial fields. You will often act as the lead Project Manager on mechanical or multidisciplinary projects with a strong focus on Client relations. Your Key Responsibilities
- Projects will involve a wide range of clients with a variety of small to large sizes in the commercial, institutional and First Nations sectors. Industrial projects will be selectively assigned based on experience and interest
- Projects involve local work for the Thunder Bay office mechanical group and other disciplines as well as support on projects for KGS Group’s other 6 offices in Canada
- Manage multiple mechanical commercial and multidisciplinary projects simultaneously from the proposal stage through to completion and commissioning, including establishment of budgets, project tracking, developing new clients and maintaining existing client relationships
- Assist the existing mechanical group in coordinating the assignment of work for yourself and the team to ensure workloads are evenly distributed
- Mechanical engineering analysis, calculations, energy modelling, and design for new systems or modifications to existing systems
- Specification and report preparation and detailed review
- Engineering drawing preparation and review, with specific focus on directing drafting staff on how to layout, annotate and organize high quality mechanical drawings
- Construction services including hosting meetings, reviewing shop drawings, progress claims, liaise between Contractors and Owner, commissioning assistance, and construction inspections / substantial completion
- Work collaboratively with other in-house and external disciplines and the project management team, ensuring schedule and budget are achieved
- Working directly with client groups including architects, owners and contractors
- Managing and mentoring junior engineering and drafting staff
About You
To fill the role, we’re looking for an applicant to bring forward a good mix of qualifications and previous experience. Some highlights could include:
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in mechanical engineering with demonstrated technical (data analysis, code and regulations reviews, design calculations, technical report writing) and project management skills (writing project progress reports, tracking budgets and maintaining schedules)
- Registered (or eligible to become registered) with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.). Registration in other Canadian provinces would be an additional asset
- Previous consulting experience is strongly preferred
- Ability and desire to own a task or project and see it through to completion with high attention to detail
- Demonstrated experience in site investigations, condition assessments, design and construction support are preferred
- Demonstrated mechanical design experience in commercial and light industrial building mechanical systems including HVAC, Plumbing and Fire Protection systems for renovation and greenfield projects Experience with green technologies is an asset
- Experience working on various types of design contracts including design-bid-build, construction management and design-build
- Industrial (non-commercial) experience is a strong asset but not essential
- Construction Administration experience including writing addendums, proposed change notices, site instructions, etc.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required
- Ability to adapt to and meet the challenges of a variety of different projects from clients in many different industries
- Candidate must be able to work independently with minimal supervision
- Experience working with Architects
- Experience working on multi-discipline projects
- Travel to project sites is usually limited but is required depending on project/client requirements
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Must be willing/able to undergo security clearance checks
The salary for this role is between $100,000 to $140,000 annually.
